The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park - iSimangaliso Wetlands

As long as Concessions and Access control are infringing on the rights of others the status of World Heritage is not deserving of this pristine Five Eco system. If the spirit of the Law is not applied the degradation will be fierce and the children of our children will never now the joys of Nature at is best untouched ...

UNESCO World Heritage Selection Criteria

The St Lucia site consists of thirteen contiguous protected areas with a total size of 234,566 hectares. The site is the largest estuarine system in Africa and includes the southernmost extension of coral reefs on the continent. The site contains a combination of on-going fluvial, marine and aeolian processes that have resulted in a variety of landforms and ecosystems. Features include wide submarine canyons, sandy beaches, forested dune cordon and a mosaic of wetlands, grasslands, forests, lakes and savanna. The variety of morphology as well as major flood and storm events contribute to ongoing evolutionary processes in the area. Natural phenomena include: shifts from low to hyper-saline states in the Park’s lakes; large numbers of nesting turtles on the beaches; the migration of whales, dolphins and whale-sharks off-shore; and huge numbers of waterfowl including large breeding colonies of pelicans, storks, herons and terns. The Park’s location between sub-tropical and tropical Africa as well as its coastal setting has resulted in exceptional biodiversity including some 521 bird species.

Justification for inscription:

  • (vii). To contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance.
  • (ix). To be outstanding examples representing significant on-going ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals.
  • (x). To contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation.
UNESCO

A Facebook page is created in the wake of recent tenders for Concessions. Concessions is an evil that should have been avoided. The right to use vest in every body. Access control is needed and Tourism is a good source of income, but the right to control it should not be allowed. It is difficult to develop a business with out ownership, for that reason tour operators was small companies that embarked on a endeavor to guide tourist on these path ways leading through pristine Wetlands.

It is clear that the creator of this FaceBook Page, "St Lucia Quo Vadis", has only his/her personal interest at heart and does not embark on a mission to save The wetlands but purely one to enjoy the benefits of public support. This is evident in his playoff between pre 1999 and post 1999 management structure and dissensions ... St. Lucia Wetland Park has a long history of human interference dating back to 1822 and beyond. Sugar Cane Farming, human settlement and Forestry has scared the system for eternity. Minimum human Interference is not a policy that could work and is merely a lazy mans job description.

Proofing Miss management under current regime would be detrimental to both parties involved. KZN Wildlife and iSimangaliso Wetlands Park. Both want the job,  but who is more capable. iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority has a vision since 1996 of controlling all income derived from this site. KZN Wildlife has a vision to keep it pristine and untouched. Commerce wants development and control. Three parties at logger head and dancing like priced fighters mincing with words.

His/Her onslaught on a draconian management structure is laughable since he accepts and deletes vocalized members to suite the profile of public support. Doing this he/she has destroyed valuable arguments that could influence the public support for the matter and only his/her point of view is forced upon the unsuspecting media that would love to chase this story. May the people have the wisdom to choose wisely and not to feed a dragon purely because of sensationalism.

Earth Buckling and squeeking - Rumblings ahead

From the early years of man's existence on this planet he has attempted looking into the future to understand the past. This is evident in man's yearning to turn to astrology, mediums and fortune tellers to predict the future and it's mysterious. Look at Stone Henge.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.[1]

The secrets of this mass man made gathering point is as mystical as it is mythical and the true meaning behind it will be only be under stood if we release our minds from the chains that religion has shackled us in.    (read more ..)

As we turn to technology to explain the un-explained we fiercely suffer from anxiety as it fails us. When we turn to ancient celestial understanding man condemn him self  and the gloom of doom takes control of their thoughts and prayers. Man created religion and then suffer from its fate. God gave Then love man turn it into hate.

When looking into the happenings on earth from any angle we want, but one thing is for sure. What ever has happened before will happen again. It is the result of Pythachoras that there will always be a begging and a end in a circle. Did the Mayans predict the closure or disruption of the circle only time will tell, but the birds saw the Dinosaurs go and the mammals come.

What ever the future bestow upon the human race it has happened in the past. When looking at weather cycles in the same way as tidal movements this becomes obvious. As the moon and the earth is trapped in a coarse around the sun they shift on angle and distances creating one in 30 one in 50 and one in 100 year storm surges earth quakes and other natural disasters.

Humans use lessons of the past when building the future. Ancient occupants used the sun moons and stars to explain the future and predict the outcome. Humans live in fear of the unexplained. Was sorcery and witchery a evil or a comfort. Modern man turns to Biblical explanations when the celestial bodies passes certain mile stones achieved millions of years in the making.

Manta Da Barra - Spring high with storm surge

Mother Nature is flexing her mussels all round the World.

Some places are left in ruins other are just badly affected by severe weather. It is always frustrating that place that do need such a storm surge will not be effected and places that are vulnerable and can do with out such a surge are always worst effected.

This beach area was hard hit by the Tidal surge of 20 February 2011, but if we look at the upside nature does a cleansing routine.

As in South Africa beach driving is illegal in Mozambique but with such a storm surge one wonders why? Millions of cubic meters of sea sand has been moved here in a very short span of time liquefying the sand and moving it away. No vehicle can do this amount of damage between two tides. But it is the law of the land and we have to respect it and preserve nature for generations to come.

Just by infra structure development one can see that storm surges like these are not a regular occurrence and totally un-expected. Speculation of 21 December 2011 is floating from lip to ear. What ever the case Mozambique has became a Holiday Destination over the past 20 years and will keep on growing in popularity.

Fear of the unknown will keep many away, but with good planning a holiday to Mozambique will be the dream you have dreamed off for a long time. Various lodges have well informed pages about the area, the people and the legal issues. For those who want a vacation on East African beaches ... unspoiled and untouched visit Mozambique ...

This story was done by For Africa and does not express the views of lodge owners. The photo's was kindly supplied by the owners of Manta da Barra Lodge ... please visit their website for more information on this beautiful coast line.

Whale Tale - Sea Shepard has an impact

Either Sea Sheppard has an Ego the size of an Ice burg or Japan is giving up. What ever the case the fact remains ... Japan has brought an early end to their Whaling Season. This is good news from any angle.

The Japanese whaling industry on Friday announced that they were recalling their fleet from the Southern Ocean due to harassment by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Such a decision marks the first time that activists have been successful in cutting the hunting season short.

Naturally, members of the Sea Shepherd were thrilled - going so far as to declare the event VSO Day or Victory in the Southern Ocean Day.

WHALE activists yesterday celebrated what they hope is the end of whaling in the Antarctic following Japan's decision to pull out for the season under conservationist harassment.

Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun said the prospect of whalers returning to the Antarctic was ''extremely gloomy'', with most parties involved agreeing the industry was unsustainable.

If this is true there is hope for our planet after all, since the harassment then proven to out weigh the economical benefits from harvested ocean mammals. What impact this is going have on the quality of human life is a lesson still to be learned since disclosure by many companies on product ingredient is vague. What ever the scenario it has become time that humans do stock take on their Environmental foot print and face the music.

Southern Crowned Crane - Balearica regulorum regulorum (South African)

Fun Fact
The crowned crane is the most primitive of the living Gruidae. Primitive species of crowned cranes date back in the fossil record to the Eocene period. Archaeologists discovered that at least eleven species of crowned cranes once existed in Europe and North America. Because crowned cranes are not cold hardy, it is believed they died out in these areas as the earth cooled, and only survived in warmer Africa.

Excitement run high aboard The Advantage Cruiser operating on St. Lucia Estuary, iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, today when a South African Crowned Crane/ Southern Crowned Crane was spotted wading in the Wetlands along the Estuary. Since these are not migratory birds it is a rare sighting and bodes well for the Wetlands.

Range:
The range of the Grey Crowned Crane in eastern and southern Africa stretches from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Kenya to southeastern South Africa. They are non-migratory, but undertake variable local and seasonal movements, and are most abundant in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The South African subspecies occurs in Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

Plastic Wrap for Preservation

Recycled Raincoat?
Wrapped in plastic has a total different meaning. But this is the outcome of our impact on earth. Wrapping and preserving everything in plastic. As we co habit earth with other species we should think of the consequences of our actions when we just dump our plastic and not recycling it. This brings new meaning to nurturing nature. All plastic that lands up in the ocean gathers some where. We must remember that most storm water drains run into streams, streams into rivers and rivers into oceans. If we lucky this plastic will only land up on our beaches where it can be cleaned up every once in a while by a handful of volunteers.

Girdle forced upon a baby Turtle
Some animals are very lucky and survive against all odds. As we see next to the Whale Observer is a mullet experiencing the same as said turtle. The mullet has been swimming around with this white plastic ring around his/her shoulders for almost three weeks.

Not all critters are this lucky
This poor bird starved with a full stomach. Is this the heritage we want to leave out children. I know I don't
All this is relevant because of the Rubbish dump we created at sea. The North Specific Gyre to be exact.
