Drought closes Mantuma Camp

September 16, 2008; Ron Physick

Due to the extreme drought being experienced in Northern Zululand, the boreholes that supply water to Mantuma Camp in Mkhuze Game Reserve have dried up. With immediate effect the camp is being closed until further notice. All visitors that have bookings are being contacted to cancel their visit and, where possible, to be offered an alternative venue. Mshopi Campsite near the main gate in Mkhuze Game Reserve has also been affected and will also be closed until further notice.

The public will be kept informed about the situation through this website. Please contact Central Reservations on 033 8451000 for further information.

The lack of water supplies within Umkhanyakude district Municipality is of serious concern, and is currently the Number one item on the Umkhanyakude district Municipalities list of priorities.

The IDP Road show at Kwa Msane a few weeks back also highlighted this. Problem is that nobody has taken time to evaluate this drought on our economy, which is still in turmoil after the governement closed our recreational use areas within the coastal zones of the Elephant Coast to reasonable motor vehicle access.

The losses caused by the current extended drought within North east KZN are adding onto the misey caused by the many job losses associated with the 4x4 Ban.

Our regional municipality needs to address these issues for what they are and not alow the Central governement to side step their responsibilty when it comes to causing job losses due to bad legislation.

We should have had quite a few dams on our various rivers in Umkhanyakude, as most of our rivers are seasonal, and dams would allow for agricultural water to be available all year. The dam that has been mooted for the Umfolozi River for many years needs to be evaluated seriously, especialy as a flood controll measure, that would also act as a silt trap for down stream water purity issues.
