Update on rhino poaching numbers and protection initiatives

I think it is time that I provide a quick update regarding the state of rhino poaching and the initiatives that are underway to protect the rhinos if Africa.
Firstly, allow me to thank every one of the 7,383 that supports this cause, for your interest and support of this cause. With your support we managed to grow the membership of this cause to the where it is today. A special word of appreciation to every-one who made financial contribution, WWF will certainly ensure that the contributions are appropriately applied.
Rhinos are still being poached at an alarming rate in South Africa. It still makes news headlines at least once a week, when we hear about another poaching incident. Up to the 6th of June, 173 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa. This equates a rhino killed every 20 hours, more than 1 per day.
There many initiatives that attempt to contain the poaching onslaught, which I hope will begin to show an decrease in the number killings in Future.
Many media groups got involved and are trying their best to raise awareness about rhino poaching. Especially Jacaranda FM and Talk Radio 702 are leading the awareness drive. Thank you to those involved, your voices reach millions of ears, which will make a difference. Eye Witness News (the news engine of radio 702) does a sterling job in this regard. The South African Police Services, the SA National Defense Force and SA National Parks board, and many government departments are now more involved in the attempt to curb poaching. All these organisations established an entity called the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure. Their primary focus is protect the rhinos against poachers. SANDF deployed troops on the border between the Kruger National Park and Mozambique and there were a number of incidents where the soldiers killed poacher that crossed the border from Mozambique to poach rhino. We all hope that the focus and dedication of this organisation will be successful in their attempts to protect the rhinos.
In conclusion, please continue to invite your friends and contacts to join and support this cause. Every little bit awareness does make a difference. Awareness results in pressure on governments and private organisations to step up to the expectations of the country and the world, to meet their obligation to protect the nature and wildlife.
I hope to see thousands of your friends as members of this cause, in the near future. If every one of us recruit just 1 of our friends in the next month, the group will double in numbers. Come on, lets grow this cause to the biggest support group in the cyber world, for the protection of rhinos.
